32-34 Westgate Street

Roof repairs and building assessments

The buildings at 32-34 Westgate Street incorporate the remains of Gloucester’s eighteenth-century Theatre Royal. First built in 1791, the theatre building was remodelled in 1922 when it was converted into a Woolworth’s. More recently, it was home to Poundstretcher.

Cathedral Quarter funding was used  to repair the roof and undertake an options appraisal to inform the future of this landmark building on Westgate Street. Heritage assessments showed that parts of the original theatre building still exist, and that the ceiling installed when became Woolworths in the 1920s still exist. A feasibility study showed what could be done with the building in future.
