BARGE PEOPLE
“The ‘Island’ is where the barge people lived. Because that was the main artery of trade. You know, when Queen Ethelfreda had to be bought here, she arrived by barge, by river, for burial at St Oswalds. They were called Westenders and seen as a separate race. When they redeveloped the area, many were rehoused at Matson and Coney Hill and there was a sense they lost their sense of identity.”
